Enhancing Learning in Homework Clubs offers schools
a practical method of enhancing pupil learning, raising grades,
improving pupil attitudes towards education and fostering positive
community relations. It is probably not going too far to claim that
where the potential of homework clubs is maximised the whole culture
and ethos of a school can change. The methods proposed in this
School Improvement Report can be adopted everywhere. They have no
added cost implications - indeed, they can reduce costs because of the
way in which the work develops. Likewise, rather than increasing the
time that teachers need to spend on the activities, the level of
supervision can actually be reduced once these approaches are
implemented. The benefits will be felt throughout the school. This
report demonstrates that, once the best methods of implementing change
are introduced, such improvements can be easier to start and are easier
to maintain than most schools imagine. Homework clubs can indeed be an
important route towards school improvement. It is a process that is
within the grasp of virtually every school in the country, providing
the best procedures are followed.
