School students are influenced by many
factors when they come to choose a university for their studies. Parents, fellow students, careers teachers,
the internet, the prospectus, course leaflets, posters, location, course fairs,
open days these and many other factors can all affect the student's choices.
We recently contacted all the schools in
the UK that teach A levels and Scottish Highers and asked questions of
both the school students and their careers teachers. The research sought to
find answers for such issues as:
v
What key factors influence the
students when choosing one university or one course against another?
v
What information do students
look for when making choices concerning universities
v
What do school students think
of open days, and how would they like them changed or developed?
v
What do the students think is
the most helpful aspect of their careers advice, and what do the careers
teachers consider to be the most helpful aspects of what they do?
v
How heavily do students use the
internet when searching for university information?
v
What specific issues are there
in relation to maths as a subject
v
What are prospective students
in maths looking for?
The results and findings are included in this report Marketing undergraduate courses in mathematics to school and gap
year students.
