Who is the best teacher: the highly motivated individual with the
personal drive to make a difference in the lives of the pupils he or
she teaches, or the teacher for whom teaching is just the job that pays
the bills? The answer is obvious. But less obvious is the answer
to the question, how can one motivate a teacher who no longer believes
that it is possible to make a difference. A lot of research has
been undertaken which successfully explains what motivates teachers to
teach. Answers have begun to emerge. It is the way in which the
teachers perceive the headteacher and other managers that determines
how motivated they are in the classroom. From this observation,
repeated in school after school, it has become clear that motivating
teachers is not that difficult, providing this basic premise is
accepted. Teacher Motivation provides clear and
detailed guidance on the ways in which teachers can be motivated
through a teacher centred approach to school management. The approach
has the great benefit that it generates ever increasing levels of
school improvement without the spending of any additional money. Using
this method school improvements begin within months of the teacher
centred programme being initiated.
