The total cost to schools of insuring against and repairing the effects of vandalism and arson, plus the cost of replacing uninsured or uninsurable items is now in excess of £100 million per year.
Yet most vandalism, theft and arson in schools is both predictable and avoidable. A modest amount of vigilance by staff, combined with a school-wide policy on security can eradicate most problems, reduce insurance costs, reduce the wastage of staff time and reduce the stress that break-ins cause. This volume offers a significant step towards solving intrusion problems in school - including uninvited daytime visitors. It sets out formal school policies to which all staff can (and must) subscribe, as well as a mass of information about how schools can take practical steps to reduce security problems. The book includes a set of templates to allow managers to check existing security measures, review security products and evolve security regulations. There are grids and check lists to cover virtually all eventualities, ensuring that having had the initial blitz on security, the school maintains its new policies.
